Raf Projects began as an alternative art space in Tehran in 2012 and after three years transformed into a curatorial collective defining and developing interdisciplinary artistic projects for Iranian and international artists. In 2017, Raf Projects was registered as a non-profit association (Verein) in Berlin to expand, joint, and exchange cultural and artistic projects between Iran and other countries. Raf is about understanding diverse contexts through holding exhibitions and talks, publishing books and catalogs, and running residency programs.
The word “Raf” refers to an architectural element in Iranian house-making tradition, a salient of the plain wooden piece on walls for placing artworks and decorations. “Raf” metaphorically means platform.
